Located in the dense west coast rainforest, Mackenzies Peak is not short on spectacular scenery. This 10-hour hike cross through thick forest terrain, creeks, and views of the South Central Mountains, Kennedy Lake and the Pacific Ocean. Due to its popularity in the 80's and early 90's, a lasting trail had foraged. Mackenzie Pek is the tallest of the Mackenzie Range standing at 1426m.
The trailhead starts along an old logging road. It can be found by travelling from Port Alberni west along highway 4 towards Tofino for roughly 60km. After crossing the Canoe Creek Bridge, look for a pullout on the right side of the road around a corner. The trailhead starts across the street to the left side. The trail then ascends quickly and ends at a river you will drop down into and cross. Once across you will make your way towards the peak facing steep slopes, exposed wood and rock that create slipping hazards. There is a small summit named the Perez Lookout perfect for anyone interested in setting up base camp. From there you will be able to see Mackenzies Peak. From there it is steep climbing through a gully and up through a bushy area until you reach the peak.
