Individual Trail

South Island / Port Renfrew

21 min driving from Port Renfrew, BC

Avatar Grove is a great hiking area for all ages and is well known for possessing “Canada’s Gnarliest Tree”. This old-growth forest has monumental red cedars and douglas firs that draw many tourists in through the Port Renfrew and Sooke regions. The trails are about 2.5 hours from Victoria, B.C. You will lose cell phone service after Jordon River and be cautious of animals (such as black bears, cougars, wolves, deer, and elk) while entering this old-growth forest.

Once arriving at the parking lot, there will be two entrances. The entrance on the right into the forest will lead you to the Lower Grove and the entrance up on the left side of the road will lead you to the Upper Grove.

The Lower Grove is a flatter trail that is a full loop and will pass by massive cedars and douglas fir trees. This trail will also bring you to Gordon River while passing many creeks, small waterfalls, and areas coated in moss and ferns. A boardwalk was completed in 2017 through this trail to help protect one of British Columbia’s endangered old-growth forests. It spans over 1 km long and offers stairs, bridges, and viewing platforms.

The Upper Grove has a much steeper trail but will lead you to “Canada’s Gnarliest Tree” along with many other large red cedars. It is well worth it to do both the trails.

Otherwise, the tracks may have been satellite traced or imported from third party sources. While we strongly believe our GPS are accurate, please be aware that no logging system is perfect and to be aware of potential errors.
